Why can a laptop not just come ready to use straight out of the box? For the past two evenings, I have been attempting to get my new ASUS laptop up to speed enough to where I can finally begin using it. I’m happy to report I’m typing this blog on it right now, but, my goodness, what it took to get to this point! Charging the battery, installing drivers, applying Windows updates, getting the touchpad to scroll… And every laptop I have ever seen is this way. You can’t just take it out of the box and begin working on it. It’s maddening.

Okay, rant over.

Well, not quite over. My technological issues the past couple of days have kept from writing anything new, and that bugs me to no end. In fact, it is late enough tonight that I simply don’t want to put forth the effort. Fortunately, though, the always dependable (and far less cranky than me, as far as I can tell) Susan Cain, author of the book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, shared another link on her Facebook page which I believe everyone should read.

Cain linked to a post from the website mindful.org titled “Feeling Overwhelmed? Remember RAIN.” The post is written by Tara Brach, a clinical psychologist and author of the book True Refuge: Finding Peace & Freedom in Your Own Awakened Heart, and it provides a powerful reminder of why and how we should be kind to ourselves as well as kind to others. I could go on, but I’d rather choose to Brach’s words do the talking, so I’m providing the link.

Feeling Overwhelmed? Remember “RAIN”

And I’m shutting off my laptop for the night.
